What is Vertigo?
Vertigo is a symptom that can be linked to a variety of conditions, injuries, and illnesses. It is most often caused by problems within the inner ear or vestibular system. Vertigo is typically described as a feeling of moving, or of a person’s surroundings moving around them, despite standing or sitting still. The sensation may be triggered by certain head movements.
Recovery depends on what the cause of your vertigo is. Some issues may be resolved after a few days of rest, while others may last for months and require professional treatment.

Vertigo Vs Dizziness - What is The Difference?
Although the terms vertigo and dizziness are sometimes used interchangeably, they are different and can be related to different causes and conditions. While vertigo is predominately a false sensation of spinning and movement, dizziness is a broad term that can describe a range of feelings including lightheadedness, wooziness, unsteadiness, weakness, near-fainting, or imbalance.
Vertigo is generally caused by issues with the body’s system or processes that control balance and hearing. While dizziness can also be linked to the vestibular system, it may be a result of a wide array of other issues, such as migraines (such as Vestibular Migraine), postural hypotension (low blood pressure), anemia (low iron), anxiety (or also a condition called Persistent Postural Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD)), or cardiac conditions (such as Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome).

Conditions That Cause Vertigo
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), which occurs when the tiny crystals of calcium in the inner ear, called otoconia, dislodge and move into the semicircular canals in the ear. These should help you deal with movements and gravity, but if they are not in their usual location, they may interfere with the normal movement of the fluid in that part of the ear, sending incorrect messages to your brain, which can cause vertigo.
Mal de Debarquement Syndrome (MdDS)
Acoustic Neuroma/Vestibular Schwannoma
Ototoxicity
Vestibular Paroxysmia
Superior Semicircular Canal Dehiscence (SSCD)
Perilymphatic Fistula
Autoimmune Inner Ear Disease (AIED)
Age related balance dysfunction
Post COVID-19 and vaccination dizziness
Balance dysfunction as a result of conditions such as multiple sclerosis, parkinson's disease or cerebellar ataxia (i.e. Friedrichs ataxia, spinocerebellar ataxia, CABV or CANVAS)

Care at The Vertigo Co
Dizziness and vertigo are prevalent problems affecting many adults and children. At The Vertigo Co, a physiotherapy clinic for adults and children aged 8 and up, we specifically support people who are affected by vertigo, dizziness, and balance-related problems such as unsteadiness or falls. We offer vestibular rehabilitation, which is a type of specialised physiotherapy that may improve dizziness and balance by providing exercises designed to retrain the vestibular system.
Should your symptoms not resolve sufficiently with vestibular physiotherapy, a referral to a trained specialist, such as a neuro otologist or a vestibular audiologist may be recommended. They can carry out other tests such as vestibular function testing (VFTs). The Vertigo Co can guide you through this process.

Physiotherapy And Vestibular Rehabilitation
Our physiotherapists tailor exercises based on your vestibular assessment, symptoms, and medical history to suit your needs and provide you with the best treatment outcome.
Your physiotherapy treatment may involve:
Education
Vestibular physiotherapists have an in-depth knowledge of vertigo, dizziness and balance disorders. We can help you understand your condition and treatment, and provide guidance related to recovery, rehabilitation, and management strategies.
Habituation Exercises
These involve repeated exposure to certain movements that may make you dizzy with the goal of settling your symptoms over time.
Balance Exercises
Various exercises that challenge and strengthen your ear balance may help you feel more steady on your feet and work towards improving your balance during rehabilitation and recovery.
Canalith Repositioning Manoeuvres
To treat dislodged crystals in benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), your physio can perform a specific manoeuvre that helps to relocate the crystals to improve your symptoms.
Gaze Stability Exercises
These have a focus that involves moving your head while maintaining your sight on a target to retrain the reflex between your eyes and ears.
